Greater Sea-spurrey
Spergularia media

This is the largest flowering of the seaside Spegularia genus, its diameter can be around 10mm. The five pink petals are whitish at the base and are usually longer than the interspersed, short green sepals. The leaves are linear and fleshy, flattened on the upper surface and rounded below, with a small papery sheath at the base. Its distribution is almost entirely coastal being found all round England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland and it forms small or extensive colonies on drier salt marshes and coastal sands, usually away from other plants. An original outline drawing by Sydney Parkinson was made as far back as Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific.
