Red Campion
Silene dioica
This shot was taken on a public footpath near to where I work in Wigan. The Red Campion grows throught most of the UK and is found amongst hedgerows, woodlands and shady areas. It flowers during May to June and the attractive red flowers have no scent, and the male and female flowers grow on separate plants. You can distinguish them by looking at the base of the flowers. The females have a swelling which will later form a seed cup. The male flowers have a slimmer base.
